A unique approach to educating

There is nothing intriguing about sitting in a fluorescent lit room, listening to someone overwhelm you with loads of information. How much as humans do we retain this way? How much can we really care about the information being presented this way? Here, at The Preventive Project, we strive to do things differently. Our education seminars educate on preventive healthcare and the importance of implementing it into our lives. Why not do this where life feels most precious? Somewhere where we can appreciate the beauty of the world we live in, making us appreciate the lives we've been given. This makes the information we share much more applicable, appreciated and retained. This is why our education seminars take place on the gorgeous waters of Lake Michigan on a sail boat. We firmly believe this unique approach to educating will change the way information is received and applied amongst our participants. This makes our efforts meaningful and our goals attainable.

Just like we take control of our sails against the weather we are given, we take control of our life against the cards we are dealt

There are many reasons why The Preventive Project wanted to take the innovative approach of incorporating sailing into our education seminars.  However, there was something so beautiful about how the goal of TPP and the art of sailing intertwined, it seemed fated to advocate in this fashion. We cannot control the cards we are dealt in this life, but we can control what steps we take to make sure we have the best chances of having a winning deck. We do this by prioritizing our health through preventive healthcare. This is what we're here to educate about at TPP. Compare this to the weather when sailing. We cannot control the weather conditions when we set sail, but we manipulate our sails so we use the conditions in our favor. With these two concepts intertwining, where better to advocate and educate about preventive healthcare than on the open waters.

How it works

Meet your captain

You'll join the set meeting point where you will meet your captain, teacher and educator for the day; your very own founder Amina Torlo!

Set sail for the day!

We'll load the boat, hoist our sails and begin drifting along the beautiful blue waters of Lake Michigan. During this time, we'll take in the views but we'll also learn about the importance of preventive healthcare.

Listen, absorb and learn

Learn about all the simple ways we can take steps towards prioritizing your health. Chat with other members as to what hesitations you may have when it comes to visiting the doctor. Have real, meaningful conversations that lead to change.

Unload the boat, and leave with TPP resources

We'll dock back at the marina and unload the vessel. Each participant will leave with a resource packet with information on preventive healthcare, a preventive healthcare checklist curated by age and demographic, and a list of healthcare providers to get you started on your journey to prioritizing your health.
